‘Rita who got pregnant too early and too young, Ginny and Marcel in Brunswick, Nick Drake, Anthony Burgess, Jacob Strengall, Leaky McFerrin at the Three Cockatoos and, rather strangely, me.
So many people. So many acutely observed details of their inner lives and their outer circumstances. It’s as if Peter Bakowski’s heart is bleeding for every single one of them, while at the same time seeing the funny side of their stories.
How many are real? How many invented? You neither know nor care, it is a populous world he has created of characters, each with their own desires and delusions which he forensically examines like a benign Godhead who loves them all.
His verse is succinct and reduced; small, apparently harmless lines unpack themselves later in the reader’s mind to lasting effect.'
